When Tadashi Daiba's father is murdered by invaders known as the Mazon, he becomes frustrated in the face of the Earth government's flippant attitude. Landing himself in prison, Tadashi finds himself invited aboard the battleship Arcadia, controlled by none other than the legendary Captain Herlock. Joining his crew on their journey through space, Tadashi's future will lead him to confront not only the Mazon, but the many other forces across the universe threatening humanity's very existence.

A new discovered 10th planet, called Lametal, will collide with earth on 9th September 1999. While the impact won't affect the giant ice planet critically, earth will be destroyed.
Yayoi, daughter of Lametal's queen and entrusted with the mission to abduct a large number of humans for slavery, befriends the orphaned boy Hajime and starts to question the intentions of her mother. Together with her human family and friends, she takes up the fight against Lametal and searches for a way to avoid earth's destruction.

One year after the events of the First Cycle, Tetsuro has returned to Earth only to end up chained in his home in Megalopolis. It is then that Maetel appears before him once again, offering him the opportunity to join her on a new journey - one she claims will lead him to his destiny.
The series initially ended in 1981, however after fifteen years Leiji Matsumoto returned to his series in 1996, moving the internal timeline on one year from where the story had previously drawn to a close.
The second cycle makes up volumes 15-21, and the first five volumes of the second cycle were released in English by Viz.
